Incumbent telco Lao Telecom has officially relaunched 5G services in the capital of Vientiane with expanded coverage, almost four years after a more limited launch in bits of the city.
When did Lao Telecom launch 5G?
Lao Telecom first launched 5G in September in a few select areas of Vientiane, including parts of Chanthabouly District and areas near the National University of Laos. Last week, Lao Telecom held another 5G launch ceremony during the Lao Digital Week event.
Where will 5G be available in Laos initially?
The 5G service will be initially provided in some areas of the capital Vientiane, including parts of Chanthabouly District and areas near the National University of Laos. A second phase will then bring the network to major provinces around the country, although it’s not clear when this will be.

At their booth at Vientiane’s National Convention Center, Lao Telecom is also showcasing cutting-edge technologies like virtual reality (VR), drone-based space exploration, iFarm solutions, cyber security, cloud computing, and M-MoneyX. All these innovations seamlessly operated with the new high-speed internet service.
Which phones can use 5G?
The 5G service only works with a handful of smartphones, namely iPhones (from iPhone 12 up) and select Oppo models. iPhone users will need to upgrade to iOS version 17.2 to use 5G. Lao Telecom says that Samsung and other models will be able to use its 5G service “soon”.
